Eglė Ridikaitė’s creative journey began close to thirty years ago, at a time when attitudes toward painting were changing in Lithuania, and the mood was marked by the rejection of traditions. An ambitious search for the new led the young painter in the direction of conceptual thinking and radical action: huge unframed canvases, sprayed (not brush-painted) surfaces, and cycles of autobiographical narration that stated rather than recounted. Emotion and interpretation were left in the viewer’s court, leaving her or him to admire the precision of the paintings’ minimalist imagery.

Today Eglė Ridikaitė’s works are frequently exhibited in Lithuania and abroad, are presented in art fairs and acquired by museum collections. But until now there has not been a catalogue of her work, preventing the artist from being properly represented in the cultural field. This publication marks the first time that Eglė Ridikaitė’s best works are presented in one place. The goal has been to reveal both the development and value of her oeuvre, which is examined in depth by art critics Raminta Jurėnaitė, Rasa Žukienė, Agnė Narušytė and Laima Kreivytė, and fellow artist Laisvydė Šalčiūtė.

This thorough survey of Eglė Ridikaitė’s work was conceived by art critic and Contour Art Gallery director Vilma Mačianskaitė, who selected the authors and can now be content that you hold in your hands a rare thing in contemporary Lithuanian art—a painting monograph about the work of a currently working and practicing woman artist.
